We don?t watch a lot of TV at our house.? I cancelled cable years ago, and aside from the news for me and an occasional show on PBS for the kids, we rarely have it on at all.?? I like it that way.? I like?that my kids are using their imagination and engaging in real-life interactions, rather than sitting on the couch staring at the TV for hours at a time.? I?like that we aren?t subjected to the annoying commercials.? I like that my home is filled with the noises and sounds of 4 healthy, active boys, and not the obnoxious banter on TV.
That being said, there is something about the holiday season that makes me want to throw all those thoughts out the window.? Maybe it?s the cold weather.? Maybe it?s the fact that the big kids are out of school for several weeks, allowing for more free time.? Maybe it?s the nostalgic feeling I get when I introduce my kids to shows that I enjoyed so much as a kid.
Whatever it is, I embrace it.
The kids and I cuddle up in front of the fireplace with some cozy blankets and?popcorn (or other treats).? We relax.? We laugh.? We chill.? We enjoy the time spent?together in a way that we don?t at other times of the year.
Do we watch way too much TV during the holiday season ?? Probably, but it?s time well spent if you ask me.
First, we check online to find the show times of all our favorite classic?holiday TV shows.
Then, we dig our holiday movies out of storage, and enjoy them over and over again until the new year.? We have?quite a few family friendly holiday movies, so it was hard to narrow it down to just ten for this list.? I had the boys vote, and these were the results.
1.? Home Alone?- We watch this one over and over again.? My boys love this story about an 8 year old boy who wishes his family would disappear, only to have it actually happen (temporarily).? A fun and entertaining film with lots of memorable moments that is sure to be a family favorite for years to come.
2.? Elf ? This is, hands down, our favorite holiday movie.? We watch it so much that my 8 year old has it pretty much memorized.? Buddy the Elf (Will Ferrell) is absolutely hilarious, and this is one of the few movies that is just as much fun for adults as it is for kids.
3.? National Lampoons Christmas Vacation ? Classic family holiday madness.? If ever you feel like your family is dysfunctional, just watch this movie.? I promise it will make you feel better.
4.? Shrek The Halls ? If you have Shrek fans in your house, this is a must-see holiday film.? Although it?s short in running time (22 minutes), it?s full of hilarious moments with Shrek and the rest of the clan from the film series.
5.? A Charlie Brown Christmas ? Who doesn?t love Charlie Brown and his gang ?? I remember anticipating this film every year as a child, and now my kids do the same.? It?s so much fun to share my childhood favorites with my boys !? Fun fact: A Charlie Brown Christmas has aired on network television every year since 1965.
6.? Dr. Seuss? How The Grinch Stole Christmas -? Although we enjoy the original animated version of this film too, we all agree that this live-action version is our favorite.? Jim Carrey as the Grinch ?? Doesn?t get much better than that.? My favorite line from the movie, ?Maybe Christmas, he thought? doesn?t come from a store.? Maybe Christmas, perhaps? means a little bit more!?? Love that!
7.? Mickey?s Once Upon A Christmas ? Mickey, Minnie, Donald Duck, Goofy, and the rest of the clan tell 3 heartwarming stories in this classic Disney collection.? I love the lessons in this one ? sacrificing for others, making the most of unexpected (and less than pleasant) holiday events, and appreciating what the holidays are really about?being grateful for, and spending time with, family and friends.
8.? The Original Christmas Classics ? (Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus Is Comin? To Town, Frosty The Snowman, Frosty Returns, Mr. Magoo?s Christmas Carol, The Little Drummer Boy, and Cricket On The Hearth)?- All the classic TV favorites from my childhood.? The unique claymation animation is fun for the kids who, sadly, are used to the digital computer animation of today.? Again, the nostalgic feeling I get as I watch these with my kids is overwhelming.
9.? The Santa Clause ? This is a funny, fantasy-filled film that kids love.? It?s so much fun to see a grown-up (Tim Allen), who doesn?t believe in Santa Claus, get a lesson in the spirit of Christmas.? I also think it?s great that this film deals with the real-life issue of divorce, which is something that many holiday films won?t tackle.
10.? SpongeBob Squarepants Christmas -? I realize that the humor in SpongeBob isn?t something every family appreciates, but we love it.? I?m always excited to find animated films that have humor geared towards both adults and kids, without being raunchy or completely inappropriate (like Family Guy or similar shows).? We?ve seen this SpongeBob movie many times, and still enjoy it just as much as the first time.
Does your family enjoy any of these family friendly holiday films ?? What else do you suggest we add to our holiday viewing list ??
