We need more glass half-full risk managers :: The Innovation of Risk

Written by: admin on April 1, 2012.

Way too many risk managers, risk experts, and risk professionals are ?glass half-empty? people.

Of course the role of risk management is to?focus on? the potential things that can go wrong, but that does not mean that the risk manager has to be negatively focused. ?In actual fact, it is that negative focus that has made risk managers the type of person that businesses wish to avoid rather than engage.

History has shown that risk managers have been perceived as the road block or the quickest way to get to a ?No?. ?This skill in being seen as such a negative in the business context is really only equalled, and perhaps surpassed, by the perception of an auditor!

Unfortunately, this perception is now causing the risk manager to have to continually fight battles on multiple fronts. ?The battle for being heard, the battle for being understood and then the battle for being relevant and important. ?Yet, in actual fact a high quality risk manager, finds that the information they have, and provide, improves business outcomes which in turn generates increased returns and/or reduces costs.

Therefore, it is with this reasoning that we say we should have more risk managers being positive, innovative, and proactive in their assessments and information for management. ?With more glass half-full people, we would see that risk managers are seen as being strategic enablers to the business.

So, how do risk managers focus on being glass half-full?

Firstly, the risk manager needs to stop seeing the negative in everyone they interact with. and everything they perform. ?Instead, we need to be more focused on finding the positive in those around us, and then working on bringing out these positives to provide better risk management information and decisions. ?We need to be more engaging with others, and really show how we can work together and help each other to succeed. ?Essentially, the risk manager needs to stop being so self-focused and centered and more external focused and team centered.

Secondly, risk managers need to trust people. ?Although, that trust needs to be balanced with healthy?scepticism, without a positive view of people, the risk manager will continue to be seen as a road block and the fastest road to ?No?. ?With a better balanced approach to working with other people, the risk manager can become an avenue to success through getting to the right assessment of the risks and controls, which leads to a ?Yes?.

Thirdly, in order to progress further to being glass half-full, we need to change the approach to assessing risks. ?Quite simply, the approach needs to be more proactive and to focus more on the future than the past. ?Through using these lenses the risk manager will become more relevant at the management table, and may even find itself the first person to be brought into a concept or a new business idea.

So, post-GFC, risk managers are in a unique position to present themselves as the future. ?This is the time for risk management to shine. ?This is the time we show how we have grown since the GFC, and have become the catalyst for making the business future a success.

So, let?s get together and get more glasses half-full. ?Let?s expand our horizons of knowledge and open of eyes to a future that will see change happen at an ever expanding rate. ?For the risk manager that can truly embrace these characteristics and leverage the collective knowledge the best, will become a positive influence on senior management and will find that the battle for being heard has been won.

Cheers, and here is to the future of glass half-full.

Paula Deen Suffers Legal Setback In 'N Word' Lawsuit | Radar Online

Splash

By Jen Heger - Radar Assistant Managing Editor

Paula Deen has suffered a legal setback in an explosive 'N word' lawsuit that was filed against her by a former general manager of one of her restaurants, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.

Lisa Jackson filed the lawsuit March 6 in Georgia against Paula Deen Enterprises, claiming a shocking pattern of alleged racism, including the use of the 'N word', sexual harassment and infliction of emotional distress and assault while working at Uncle Bubba's Oyster House.

EXCLUSIVE DOCS: Judge Denies Paula Deen?s Request For A Gag Order

Deen's lawyers sought a gag order in the case because according to court documents, "a protective order is necessary because Ms. Jackson and her counsel have made abundantly clear that they intend to engage in a path of personal and financial destruction because Paula Deen would not pay their pretrial settlement demand...Through her cooking and television exposure, Mrs. Deen has arguably become the face of Southern cuisine and living....For a public figure such as Mrs. Deen, even if Ms. Jackson's allegations are proven untrue, the harm resulting from the continuing mass dissemination of the allegations may never be undone."

PHOTOS: Celebrity Racist Rants

However, Judge Louisa Abbot has now denied the gag order request and said in her written ruling, "Having considered the parties' arguments, the Court finds the litigants' concerns about potentially adverse pretrial publicity and the potential effects of damage to their reputations do not outweigh any of the constitutional principles invoked by this motion, including freedom of press and speech."

The shocking lawsuit has blockbuster allegations including one in which Jackson states that she was appointed by Deen to handle the catering and staff for Bubba's wedding in 2007, and she asked Deen what the servers should wear: "Well what I would really like is a bunch of little n***ers to wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties, you know in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around," Jackson alleges Deen told her. "Now, that would be a true Southern wedding wouldn't it? But we can't do that because the media would be on me about that."

DOCUMENTS: Read The Explosive Lawsuit Against Paula Deen Enterprises (WARNING OFFENSIVE LANGUAGE)

Another alleged racist incident listed in the lawsuit: "In the presence of Ms. Jackson and Uncle Bubba's restaurant manager and a vendor, Bubba Hiers stated they should send President Obama to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico so he could n***er-rig it."

The queen of Southern cooking says in court docs that Jackson attempted to extort her for $1.25 million dollars. "Prior to the filing of this suit, Jackson repeatedly threatened to assert scurrilous claims publicly in the press unless huge sums of money were paid to Jackson and her counsel, which demand was refused. Jackson's suit should be dismissed, for among other reasons, on equitable grounds on the basis of clean hands."

According to a letter from Jackson's attorney, she would settle out of court, but Deen's lawyers declined that offer, and shortly thereafter the lawsuit was filed.

Launched officially today, the Institute on Asian Consumer Insight (ACI) announced its strategy and plans for becoming the world's go-to centre for companies seeking to grow their business in Asia.

Top on the list is an Asia Consumer Summit, organised with the Financial Times. Modelled in format after the World Economic Forum in Davos, this event, to be attended by global business leaders, will be a platform to examine Asian consumers. The rest of this year's calendar is filled with conferences headlined by big names in the region, like Acer's Stan Shih, and uniquely Asian events including a seminar on "Ghosts, Spirits, Lucky Numbers and Other Superstitions" and the consumer.

The Institute, funded jointly by the Singapore Economic Development Board and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), is a world-class, first-of-its-kind institute focused on Asian consumers. Through research, education programmes and industry collaborations, ACI will help companies develop strategies for Asian markets. Hosted at NTU and funded up to $77 million over five years, the Institute will help businesses innovate brands, products and services, based on insight about pan-Asian consumer needs, wants, and preferences.

The Institute was officially launched at an inauguration ceremony at the Mandarin Orchard Hotel Singapore. Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister for Home Affairs and Trade & Industry, S. Iswaran, presided over the event.

In his speech, Mr. Iswaran noted that the launch of the institute is in tandem with the shift in economic focus to Asia. He added that Singapore's ideal location and integrative research capabilities in biomedical sciences and engineering will benefit consumer goods companies looking to access and capture market opportunities in the region and beyond.

"Singapore's physical connectivity and cultural proximity to the region, coupled with our multi-cultural talent base, makes us an ideal outward looking pan-Asian hub for many research agencies and consultancies to acquire a nuanced understanding of similarities and differences among Asian consumers," said Mr. Iswaran.

Top executives of global consumer goods and market research companies also attended the event. They included Unilever, ADK, Kraft Foods, Research in Motion, and Nielsen, which have committed to collaborating with ACI on various initiatives. Also present were Professor Amitava Chattopadhyay from INSEAD, Professor Shi Zhang from the UCLA, Ms Leung Cheong Tai, President (Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa) from Nielsen, and Mr BV Pradeep, Vice President (Consumer & Market Insight) from Unilever, who participated in panel discussions on consumer insights, and strategy and growth.

"Unilever is delighted to support ACI. We need thought leadership and insights about Asian consumers that we can use for marketing and product innovations." said Mr Pradeep.

Ms Leung said, "As consumer needs evolve at an increasingly rapid pace, insights into how and why they make purchasing decisions become even more critical for companies to win, and also identify emerging demand for growth. We welcome the ACI's initiatives to accelerate the development of talents in the region, which will foster an even stronger community of professionals to help companies win."

At the event, NTU President, Bertil Andersson highlighted ACI's relevance to NTU's strategy of becoming a New Silk Road of knowledge that combined the best of the East and West. "The study of Asian consumer insight is one that relies on expertise across many disciplines. Say, you are looking to make inroads into the Asian retail markets. You may start by looking to history, culture, psychology, to figure out what goes on in the mind of the consumers. This requires a multi-disciplinary approach. At NTU, ACI will have access to some of the world's best brains in fields like marketing, culture intelligence, accounting, engineering, and very soon, neuro-science when NTU's new medical school, the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, set up in partnership with Imperial College London, enrols its first 50 students in August next year," he said.

The Institute is led by Executive Director Bernd Schmitt, who is currently at NTU as a Nanyang Visiting Professor. A professor of international business at Columbia Business School, New York, and Director at the Centre on Global Brand Leadership, Professor Schmitt has taught and conducted research on Asian consumers for almost 20 years, at universities such as CEIBS in China, Yonsei University in South Korea, and Hong Kong University. He has also consulted for a variety of organizations Sony in Japan, Samsung, Lotte, and Amore Pacific and Hanjin in South Korea, Wheelock in Hong Kong and Tata Industries in India.

"The Asian consumers are set to become the number one priority for companies around the world. Vibrant economies and youthful demographics are creating the world's fastest growing middle class. Firms that are seeking that next phase of growth cannot ignore this region and I'm most excited for this opportunity to lead this pioneering work at the frontier of the global consumer franchise," said Professor Schmitt.

Conferences, Seminars and Executive Programmes

ACI's flagship event is the Asia Consumer Summit, which will be the global platform to examine issues of growth and strategy, exploring Asia's latest consumer trends and how to capitalise on business opportunities that arise from them. Organised in partnership with the Financial Times, it is fashioned after the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, and will bring together the world's most influential and iconic leaders from business-to-consumer (B2C) companies, research firms, creative agencies and academia. The inaugural conference is scheduled for October 11, 2012.

Prior to that, ACI will be organizing its first seminar on Friday, 13th April, at 1808hrs. Titled "Ghosts, Spirits, Lucky Numbers and Other Superstitions and How They Influence Consumer Behaviour", this seminar will help retailers, hoteliers, property developers and other companies unravel the mysteries of how superstitions affect consumer perceptions, decisions and ultimately business. For more tailored insights on market-specific trends and issues, ACI will be conducting several Country Series seminars this year. The first of the Country Series takes place in July, with the spotlight on South Korea. This will be followed by a seminar on India in August, and one on Indonesia in December. The Institute will also offer executive education courses for working professionals. It will also develop customised courses for companies that want their employees to be trained to meet their specific needs.

Research

ACI, through its research fellows, conducts academic research in areas such as consumer decision-making, consumer psychology and consumer culture. ACI fellows are a multi-disciplinary faculty from universities in the region, including NTU, National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University, INSEAD, and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. ACI has already invited professors from leading US business schools, such as University of Chicago, University of California, Los Angeles, and Columbia University, to present their research. It has established a partnership with the Centre on Customer Insight at the University of St Gallen, Switzerland.

Master of Science Programme

ACI, together with the Nanyang Business School, will launch a Master of Science in Marketing programme in October 2012 to help nurture talent that understands Asian consumers, and possesses the know-how to reach out to them. This one-year, part-time programme will focus on developing quantitative and qualitative research skills to analyse, evaluate and appreciate the unique needs of Asian consumers. Students will learn well-established research methods like survey design as well as cutting-edge methods such as ethnography, text mining and Bayesian analysis. More than just theory, participants will learn how to implement and apply these methods in practically relevant contexts, such as design, branding and product innovation.

Industry Collaborations

ACI invites companies to engage in joint projects and create "next practices" for areas such as understanding young Asian females, "the bottom of the pyramid" and emotional consumption. Corporations can sponsor company-specific research projects and case studies, which will provide them with key strategic insights into how they can grow their businesses in Asia.

Scientists on expedition in the Burundi rainforest discover a single specimen, nearest relatives live 1,400 miles away

SAN FRANCISCO -- Herpetologists from the California Academy of Sciences and University of Texas at El Paso discovered a single specimen of the Bururi long-fingered frog (Cardioglossa cyaneospila) during a research expedition to Burundi in December 2011. The frog was last seen by scientists in 1949 and was feared to be extinct after decades of turmoil in the tiny East African nation.

For biologists studying the evolution and distribution of life in Africa, Burundi sits at an intriguing geographic crossroads since it borders the vast Congo River Basin, the Great Rift Valley, and the world's second largest freshwater lake, Lake Tanganyika. Many of the species in its high-elevation forests may be closely related to plants and animals found in Cameroon's mountains, suggesting that at some point in the past, a cooler climate may have allowed the forests to become contiguous.

Previous knowledge of Burundi's wildlife came from scientific surveys conducted in the mid-20th century, when the nation was under Belgian administration. But its history since then has been one of political unrest, population growth, and habitat loss. Today, approximately 10 million people occupy an area the size of Massachusetts, giving Burundi one of the highest population densities in Africa.

Academy curator David Blackburn joined his colleague Eli Greenbaum, professor at the University of Texas at El Paso, on the 2011 expedition with the goal of finding Cardioglossa cyaneospila, as well as other amphibians and reptiles first described 60 years ago. To their pleasant surprise, the habitats of the Bururi Forest Reserve in the southwest part of the country were still relatively intact, with populations of rare forest birds and chimpanzees present.

With little knowledge to go on except a hunch that C. cyaneospila would make a call like its possible close relatives in Cameroon, Blackburn finally found a single specimen on his fifth night in the forest.

"I thought I heard the call and walked toward it, then waited," said Blackburn. "In a tremendous stroke of luck, I casually moved aside some grass and the frog was just sitting there on a log. I heard multiple calls over the next few nights, indicating a healthy population of the species, but I was only able to find this one specimen."

The Bururi long-fingered frog is about 1.5 inches long, with a black and bluish-gray coloration. The males are notable for one extra-long finger on each foot, analogous to the "ring finger" in humans, whose purpose is unknown. Its closest relatives live in the mountains of Cameroon, more than 1,400 miles away.

The lone specimen collected, which now resides in the Academy's herpetology collection, can be used for DNA studies to determine how long the Cardioglossa species from Burundi and Cameroon have been genetically isolated from one another. The results will shed light on Africa's historical climate conditions, a topic that has far-reaching implications for understanding the evolution of life in the continent that gave rise to our own species.

In addition to locating the Bururi long-fingered frog, Blackburn and Greenbaum also documented dozens of other amphibians in Burundi, many of which had never before been recorded in the country. The team also discovered some species that may be new to science.

"Eventually, we will use the data from our expedition to update the IUCN conservation assessment for amphibians of Burundi," said Greenbaum. "Because Burundi is poorly explored, we've probably doubled the number of amphibian species known from the country. Once we demonstrate that Burundi contains rare and endemic species, we can work with the local community to make a strong case for preserving their remaining natural habitats."

I will like to begin this post?

I will like to begin this post by indicating this simple fact:

Inchestwenty years before when online initial has been around since plus the first web page is made, lots of people been curious about what the full notion was supposed to be about some exactly the same set of men and women can?t picture existence without it 19 years just after. In .

I really like the thought of Making Money Online ? it is actually very much as well easy (only touch the correct keys) and I?m also able to be named a businessperson.

Starting off an actual globe company may be a difficult fanatic to hack if you do not develop the appropriate cable connections.

You need to get your enterprise recorded, you?ll need a attorney at law that will help you generate a couple of lawful paperwork, you will have to generate a real-time office with rental prices intended to be paid out, you must also take visitors to your working environment or visit meet up with them so as to make sales? With no some kind of support by any means, these and more are what you?re most likely to facial area. I ponder if there is a much better position to generate versus the online.

When you are scanning this article along with not even begun an online business, I?m going to say you happen to be passing up on some terrific chances. And beginning a business online is incredibly uncomplicated, all you require upfront are these a number of basic items:

That is similar to any real world target when their capabilities are compared. Whilst an traditional correct says to you to find a unique home, web site or web site points you to definitely an internet site .. Domain names are really cheap for getting while they can be bought in the area of Bucks10. Website registrars like GoDaddy and NameCheap are preferred and this is for the motive?

Future you want a web hosting service service what is the best your blog might be published. I prefer to look at hosting as a bit of land what is the best you constructor your residence(your blog however).

Your web website hosting enables other people to find you on-line. And though some people supply free internet hosting services, you only get all the at their store. You should not grumble whenever your web page suffers from plenty of downtime and once you get some sub standard customer satisfaction. Dependable webhosts go cheaper than Dollar10 every thirty days, an ordinary sponsor like Hostgator or Bluehost applies to a price around Dollar5. I can?t say all this but take a look and pay attention to spinning program so well. You may only emerge what you devote to.

Receiving a great topic carries a enormous touching on how your web-site can make. Attempt publishing an excellent submit after which put it up a website with horrendous shopping design and style, design and map-reading and find out what happens.

A very good internet layout adds to the user experience on the web site a good style at times can make great articles much better. But see I mentioned superior content, in the event you produce outdated rubbish and article them over a website while using greatest design in the world you will note NO final results. People want excellent content very first other people comply with. Along with the final factor you require?

It is advisable to put in place an investment digesting system where you could agree to plastic card transaction on-line. Should you don not give folks a method to repay and if you do not help them to make the repayment, they will find yourself buying in other places ? Your competition. But if your subscribers do not buy from you, your web site will never make money as well as finally work aground. Even if your internet site is for relief reasons, you still need to give people an option of earning donations, even Wikipedia does this.

So doing the primary point about this publish, listed below are the 7 rewards you?ll be able to be a consequence of performing on the net through performing it offline, in real life?

Everyone will be your consumer over the internet. Like a Nigerian, I am able to have somebody from Vietnam purchasing from me though my next door neighbour also purchases from me. Their own of buyers is endless. Zynga has greater than 250 , 000, 000 day-to-day sessions and a web site like Google also records regular outings inside the parts of 620 trillion. Now imagine that your web-site has say a per-cent of Yahoo?s day-to-day website ideas. That is definitely 6 million people browsing your internet site each day. Or let?s say .01 % ? which is nevertheless 62,000 everyday sessions for a web-site. You can give they a totally free solution to make them decide-in to your autoresponder or subscribe to your ezine. By so carrying out you?re making capital. Some people could even be one particular-time targeted traffic that happen to be amazed sufficient in what one does (if without a doubt you?re up to anything outstanding) and purchase the merchandise you advise.

By working over the internet, you are not on a your region. I mean your enterprise might go along anywhere you go. And as you are not decided to generate a real world correct in order to apply for a blog, you can do without one. The point We?re working to make here?s making use of a laptop computer and net connection, you are able to work websites successfully. It is possible to take flight on standard job, your small business jigs on hand when you are over a Opera with the family you could nonetheless function your business. It is possible to work world wide web company from anywhere ? the dining room table, bed room, and from Hong Kong to Chile. This is just what I call the Internet Way of life and it?s one thing and enjoy.

You will be unable to obtain the kind of overall flexibility the web will give you in different down to earth small business (unless you chance a really significant business enterprise). With a business online you can come to a decision when you ought to do your advertising for your products that you are marketing, you choose when you produce the subsequent post on your website, you opt for when you should ask selection interviews web-sites, and you make your mind up when to relax. I am able to elect to write a short article over the nights so the better a part of my early morning is spent sleeping, or I?d personally even want to consider entire week away from and use a family vacation. Simply because I CAN undertake it.

To begin a web based business you don?t 1000s of dollars. Keep in mind that start a web business with as few as a couple Buckslots. As an example, when i reported at the beginning of this text, to produce a website like Profits Field all you should have to begin with are: a Buck10 domain address, a Buck60 web host program with Hostgator, a Bucks70 quality WordPress motif with WooThermes in addition to a Buck19 autoresponder account service with Getresponse (that you receive the first month for Buck1) And with some serious operate by you, your website must be able to operate on its own without further more expenditure of your stuff as soon as the first couple of weeks. So far as I am aware no world organization can supply you with this.

How much know-how accessible to people and network marketers dads and moms we are living in is gigantic, that is simply from it all is the fact a majority of these computer software and put-ins cost nothing to obtain. As I started out Income Picture, each of the connect-inches width We used had been obtained totally free and one too (Multi Functional Search engine optimization Group) forced me to be rank top rated to get a key phrase with over 12 , 000, 000 final results on yahoo- all in a couple of days without any exclusive perform. There are many applications now available that will help systemize any kind of job, a lot more it is still produced. Consumption is that you open your body and mind and increase your research in order that you know where you should search.

Price The repeating expense of managing an internet business is harmlessly low. The price you need to recurrently spend on would include autoresponder expenses and purchase running fees. The rest will in all probability be volume obligations (total annual, biennial, and so forth.) and transaction for connection to the internet. From what ever position you see it, a web based business demands significantly less from you with regards to expenses in comparison with not online businesses the place you should cover rent and income.

A final and one of the most critical profit wptouch I derive from operating an online business which I won?t get with the offline business enterprise, almost certainly thanks to my maturity is the ability to be known as a businessman. For web businessman is really easy whilst comparing it with the laws and methods it?s important to follow which causes the area start out an offline organization.

In addition to being a section please note, I must remember to mention the world wide web has (around)refined and quickened the procedure of getting feedbacks. Easily operate a marketing and advertising for a products and sales transpire not to grab, I?m able to quickly find out what travelled improper and proper my blunders. By letting feedback promptly, I?m able to advance quicker with my website. While finding the exact same advertising in real life ? employing classified ads, bills or replys, snail mail, or some other approach requires 2 or 3 weeks or months for similar reviews to be got.

Living as a possible world wide web businessperson allows all people an even planes that to be competitive. You can be an 80 yr old grand daddy, a 13 yr old home -liscensed little one or you could be working to the Supervisor (inside of a 9 to 5 occupation). Regardless of yourself or that you come from, all you have to do will be to determine if starting an internet business is right for you. As for me, I am a digg along with an small business owner, and no one usually takes that from me.
